LEAD / SENIOR DESIGN ENGINEER: WATER AND SANITATION, PIETERMARITZBURG, KZN

THE LEVEL OF THE POSITION WILL BE DEPENDENT ON THE SUCCESSFUL INCUMBENT’S QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE.

REPORTING DIRECTLY TO THE:  EXECUTIVE MANAGER: WATER AND SANITATION-PIETERMARITZBURG.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Eng. / BTech (Civil) or equivalent accepted by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
  • Professionally registered with ECSA as a Pr Eng / Pr Tech Eng.
  • At least 10 years’ relevant experience in the consulting industry.
  • Extensive experience in the use of GCC and FIDIC. Experience with NEC and JBCC will be advantageous.
  • Competency in using MS Projects and MS Office suite.
  • Design competency of water and sanitation infrastructure packages.
  • Design of township roads and stormwater systems will be advantageous.
  • Competency and working knowledge in the use of Civil 3D and/or Civil Designer, or other relevant design packages.
  • Knowledge and use of Hammer or KY-Pipe will be advantageous.
  • Client liaison.
  • Feasibility studies, business plans, preliminary and detailed design.
  • Tender and contract document preparation.
  • Project management and construction monitoring.
  • Ability to generate work for the Company.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills coupled with a sense of urgency and a participative management style.
  • Excellent leadership and management skills.
  • Strong administrative skills.
  • Ability to work independently, but also as part of a dynamic team.
  • Have a keen eye for detail and work accurately under pressure.
  • Deadline driven.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Ability to travel locally and internationally if required.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Carry out research, compile relevant data, evaluation of the technical and financial aspects, complete with cost estimates and budget quotations for civil engineering proposals.
  • Manage Engineers, Technologists, Technicians and site staff throughout the planning, design, tender, implementation and close out stages of various water and sanitation projects.
  • Conduct research and carry out feasibility studies.
  • Prepare business plans for submission and approval by DWS, MIG and other relevant funding organisations.
  • Carry out preliminary and detailed design for urban and rural water reticulation systems, pump stations, rising mains and reservoirs.
  • Carry out preliminary and detailed design for urban and rural sewer reticulation systems, outfalls, pump stations and rising mains.
  • Produce and supervise the production of technical drawings, designs and reports as directed.
  • Prepare tender and contract documents including detailed specifications, special conditions of contract and bills of quantities.
  • Check all drawings, designs, reports and documents produced in accordance with the Company’s Quality Management System.
  • Manage tender processes, conduct Tender evaluations and report to the Client.
  • Contract administration and inspection as well as construction monitoring, as necessary, and management of site staff as appropriate.
  • Carry out site inspections and other assigned construction monitoring activities in accordance with the Company’s Quality Management System’s requirements as set out in the applicable work instructions and checklists.
  • Attend meetings and write notes and reports.
  • Produce progress reports.
  • Direct reporting to the Executive Manager: Water & Sanitation-Pietermaritzburg.
  • Mentoring of graduate engineers, technologists and technicians.
  • Management of projects and monitoring of performance and profitability.
  • Maintain regular and continued professional development through on the job training, in-house courses, seminars or outsourced specialist training as required and as agreed with the designated Executive Manager or other Responsible Person.
