INFRASTRUCTURE ADVISORY
A core high-level team explores opportunities for Mariswe to combine management, planning, consulting and project-specific expertise in the provision of comprehensive project life-cycle solutions in diverse sectors. This includes agriculture, mining and telecommunications infrastructure where Mariswe already has strong project experience, as well as emerging sustainable markets. The Infrastructure Advisory Team focuses on the private sector, public private partnerships (PPPs), and institutional finance organisations such as World Bank.
Any organisation or utility that makes use of assets and infrastructure to produce a product or provide a service, is reliant on the efficient and effective use, operation and maintenance of such assets or infrastructure. Asset Management (AM), is a sector specialist field and consists of technologies, tools, systems, processes and people that combined with appropriate financial planning, assist a utility in optimising performance and managing its risks. Maintaining your fixed asset register does not mean you maintain your assets!
At Mariswe, we apply a comprehensive Asset Management Life Cycle that supports our clients in achieving long-term value from their infrastructure. This structured process includes Requirements Definition, ensuring alignment with user needs and strategic objectives. Also included in the process is Asset Planning and Budgeting, Procurement and Creation, and the active stages of Asset Operation and Maintenance through to Performance, Condition Assessment and Monitoring. As assets age or needs evolve, we manage Renewal, Upgrading and Rehabilitation, and responsible Decommissioning and Disposal. These processes are reiterated based on circumstances on the ground and evolve to meet client demands. By managing each stage rigorously, Mariswe helps reduce risk, optimise service and product delivery, ensuring that assets perform reliably and efficiently over their full life cycle.
With our engineering and consulting background of more than 50 years, we have an in-depth understanding of the importance in having functional infrastructure to assist in service delivery, especially in a developing country context. Mariswe has met the registration requirements of the Southern African Asset Management Association (SAAMA) and now offers Asset Management Services as a dedicated professional discipline.
The Asset Management Life Cycle:
WE OFFER THE FOLLOWING SERVICES THAT SUPPORT THE ASSET MANAGEMENT LIFE CYCLE:
BUSINESS PROCESS ANALYSIS
Applying a systems-thinking approach, we perform business analysis on the existing assets under management or control to establish an asset profile and an understanding of the product or service being delivered. The business processes such as Standard Operating Procedures, enabling environment including people, tools, technology and funding are also assessed together with information management on assets. This assessment informs the required strategy, actions and funding requisites for continued asset management improvement.
ASSET MANAGEMENT PLANNING
Asset management should be formalised to ensure its uptake and application in an organisation. The development of an asset management strategy, action plan, management plan, operations and maintenance plan, forms part of such a process, which is an iterative process.
An organisation has to review and amend its plans informed by historic and current asset management information, but also its future obligations or goals.
ASSET PROCUREMENT ASSISTANCE
Mariswe develops detailed specifications for the procurement of asset management systems or physical assets that align with an organisation’s business requirements, ensuring a streamlined and effective procurement process. Our experienced project and construction management professionals manage and oversee the constructure and commissioning of assets. This includes ensuring specifications and process are in place to handle and manage information of the newly-commissioned assets.
ASSET MANAGEMENT SUPPORT & SPECIALIST SERVICES
Assets should be optimally used for the duration of their useful life, or longer if possible (must be economically sustainable). However, should assets fail, there will be specific reasons such as in the case of water pipe bursts that lead to frequent service interruptions. Mariswe can assist with the identification of root causes and making appropriate recommendations for addressing non-revenue water (NRW); or development of asset rehabilitation plans.
Management of non-sewered sanitation is another area of concern that requires a specific framework and approach to manage safely – for both the consumer and the environment. Specific infrastructure sectors may require specific asset management approaches. We have a diverse team of specialists that can be drawn from, to assist a client whether in the water & sanitation; roads & stormwater; transport; energy; facilities or other sectors. Finally in the asset management life cycle there is asset decommissioning or disposal. We support the circular economy and sustainable living therefore aim to assist a client in not only the optimal use of an asset, but also its appropriate reuse or retirement.
TRAINING & CAPACITY BUILDING
A skilled workforce supported through great leadership are indispensable qualities of a progressive and prosperous organisation. Mariswe can facilitate formal and informal training to clients in the use of asset management systems; establishing Standards Operating Procedures; update and review of asset management, operations and maintenance plans; financial planning and budgeting; and more.
Learn-by-doing is a very effective method of training as well as learning from others. Mariswe facilitates peer learning sessions or partnerships that can in turn assist a client towards continuous improvement in asset management.
