Project Detail

The contract for 33 km of the second carriageway of the N4 Bakwena Toll Highway Road between the Marikana Interchange and the R512 Brits West Interchange included the following structures:

Section 1 – km 224.0 to km 234.1

Three extensions to road bridges over the N4:

  • Bridge B2239: 46.22mx13.02m with a voided cast in-situ prestressed concrete deck supported on perched abutments and multiple solid column piers on piled foundations;
  • Bridge B1670: 174mx10.25m with a box girder-type cast in-situ prestressed concrete deck supported on spill-through abutments and multiple solid column piers founded on spread footings;
  • Bridge B2243: 47.08mx8.63m with a continuous voided cast in situ concrete deck supported on temporary abutment and multiple solid column piers on piled foundations.

Section 2 – km 212.0 to km 224.0

Three road bridge extensions over the N4 and a road-over-river bridge dualization:

  • Bridge B1676: 43.67mx4.67m with a voided cast in-situ prestressed concrete deck supported on perched abutments and multiple solid column piers founded on spread footings;
  • Bridge B1672: 51.78mx10m with voided cast in-situ prestressed concrete deck supported on abutments and a pier wall founded on piled foundations;
  • Bridge B1671:4mx11.2m; and Bridge B1675: 31.08mx11.9m – as above.

Section 3 – km 205.4 to km 212.0

Road-over-river bridge dualization and road bridge extension over the N4:

  • Bridge B1678: 31.7mx11.85m as above;
  • Bridge B1677: 43.56mx4.67m with a voided cast in-situ prestressed concrete deck supported on perched abutments and multiple solid column piers founded on spread footings.

Section 4 – km 234.1 to km 238.2

Road-over-canal bridge dualization:

  • Bridge B2242: 13.19mx11.85m with a series of prestressed precast concrete beams with cast-in-situ infill for the deck supported on abutments founded on spread footings.
