Project Detail

Mariswe was appointed to provide the consulting engineering services for the upgrade of 37 km of the N2 between Mtunzini Toll Plaza and Empangeni T-junction.

A new northbound carriageway was built, involving the extension of existing underpasses and overpasses and construction of the new bridges over rivers, roads and railways lines. The following structures formed part of the project:

Mlalazi River Bridge

The 117.7 m long, 14.4 m wide bridge is a four-span structure with fully open side spans, simply supported, precast prestressed concrete beam deck, cantilever wall-type abutments with asphaltic plug joints and three internal supports comprising wall type piers.

Port Dunford Bridge

This 18.6 m long, 13.4 m wide structure comprises a simply supported, inverted prestressed, precast T-beam deck supported on mechanically stabilised earth wall abutments with buried type movement joints.

Sugar Mill Bridge

This large cast in-situ box culvert, with an opening 4.5 m high x 8 m wide under 3 m high fill, provides access for cane hauliers.

Empangeni Interchange Bridge

The four-span structure is 94 m long and 13.4m wide with partially open side spans, reinforced multi spine beam deck monolithic with reinforced concrete piers, cantilever wall-type abutments with claw and gland type joints over the abutments and three internal supports, each consisting of two piers.
